Airbnb vs Hotel

Yes…Yes…Yes… This is quite like comparing weather to climate, still being a recurrent traveler I couldn’t help, but analyze Airbnbs and Hotels. I have visited multiple states and countries in which I have lodged at both Airbnb and Hotels, so I am not claiming to be an expert. Nonetheless, there are some differences that I noted as well as when and why I would stay in each.

Let us begin with the Airbnb:

I must admit that the majority of the Airbnbs I visited were, well amazing. In most instances, I was with fairly large groups (6 -16), so we were able to really choose luxurious accommodations and have them all to ourselves. I’ve also stayed in an Airbnb when it was a shared house with other guests within the home on an occasion when it was just my husband and I the experience was nothing different. This brings me to my first point.

First, Airbnbs are perfect for accommodating large groups of people while still having a personal space. It is perfect for family get-togethers or celebrating a special occasion, for example, my wedding shower was located at an Airbnb. A vacation home such as an Airbnb can average 2000 square feet whereas a Hotel can average 400 Square feet.

Secondly, this will depend on the city but parking can be painless and of assistance. It is easier within a city that is walking distance to everything making it less expensive to locate parking. Thirdly, Airbnb oftentimes comes with amenities in addition to your stay with access to a washer and dryer. This is a plus especially if you’re traveling with children or just traveled with few clothing items. Many take this amenity for granted. Fourth, there is a kitchen available. The kitchen can offer moments to share in cooking together and eat over a large dining table or easily around an island. You can cook one of the nights instead of eating out and cut down on food expenses.

Fifth, the outside areas in most Airbnb are spacious and beautiful. From breathtaking city views and having large deck areas with comfortable furniture for everyone to relax on. Sixth, the hosts go out of their way to make you feel welcome. It can be from the fresh flowers to snacks in your apartment. At an Airbnb, you don’t feel like a number as being in a hotel. Seventh, navigate like a local. You can experience the neighborhood and literally be a local. Some hosts will include recommendations and guides of things to do but it is solely up to you to figure your day to day plans. Lastly, Airbnb is often times more affordable than hotels. An average price for a hotel in the US is $118/night accommodating on two persons whereas an Airbnb roughly 1,300 sq. ft. can sleep more than 6 and average $99/night.

Moving on to hotels:

Hotels are the commonly the more preferred choice to lodge for the majority when traveling. First, there is a sense of safety that a hotel provides for guests. For guests traveling to a new country, most feel more comfortable staying at a resort. Secondly, many love the idea of staying in the hotel for the maintenance aspect. Having someone for housekeeping to be on clean-up duty for even just one day, feels like a vacation. People like having their room cleaned every day at the hotel, especially the bathroom when there are children included in the party. Thirdly, hotels are perfect for 4 people in one room or suites for larger families. Hotels truly capitalize on business travel and quick weekend getaways. Fourth, hotels tend to be closer to restaurants and recommended site seeing locations. In addition to, airport shuttles may be available at specific hotels and excursion pick up/drop off locations. Fifth, having the freedom and access to someone for anything. Whether it is for questions regarding the room, surrounding areas or simply wanting a friendly smile as you enter and leave the building. At a hotel, some may enjoy utilizing the amenities more than others such as the spa services and concierge. Sixth, fitness areas are typically available for those who can't miss a beat while vacationing. It is these little things that divert someone from booking an Airbnb. Seventh, there is a breakfast available every morning at the majority of hotels. There is nothing like a good breakfast buffet to start your day when you are traveling.  All-inclusive resorts are always an additional perk because breakfast, lunch, dinner, non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks are included with your stay. You basically do not need to leave the hotel for anything besides the excursions. Hotels have a lobby bar if you want to grab a drink, you really don’t have to go out for a drink. Lastly, hotels are getting clever about adding fees to your bill but fees associated with Airbnb and other private rentals can also add up.

What do you think? Do you have a preference when you travel? What am I missing from my lists?

For my personal travel experiences, it all depends on the number of people in my party and the occasion for which we are traveling. I do both often but it also depends on the state/country I am visiting and which is going to be the better bang for the buck.
