Turks & Caicos Guide: 6 Things You Need To Know

Turks and Caicos is a British territory in the Caribbean consisting of two group islands. The gateway island of Providenciales, known as Provo, is home to expansive Grace Bay Beach, with luxury resorts, shops and restaurants. It is located southeast of the Bahamas and North of Hispaniola. Provo is literally one hour flight away from Haiti. When you mention Turks and Caicos to people, many have no idea where it is! In actuality I did not either until my flight was booked. Turks and Caicos, a country that is made up of 40 different islands and cays in the Caribbean, is a great location for your next vacation. Turks is known for their beaches, they have the perfect conditions for snorkeling, parasailing, and scuba diving. But there is so much more to do there. Whether you are heading there with your family, friends or significant other the island has many options to really enjoy what it has to offer.

The last time I traveled to Turks & Caicos Islands was January and June of 2017 so this is a recap for all the travelers heading this way this year. The gorgeous blue waters of Providenciales is a sight to see and you will definitely be soaking up the sun. If you are planning a trip to Turks and Caicos here is a list of 6 things you need to do! FYI

Thursday Fish Fry!

IMPORTANT! You must fly into the island on a Thursday because you MUST go to the “Thursday Fish Fry” located in Providenciales. This is a local event every Thursday consisting of food vendors, live music and local artists. It begins at 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. If you stay near Bight Park I would suggest walking instead of driving because it can get packed and difficult to find parking. The cultural night is an evening of “all things TCI.” The host of the evening is very interactive and has the crowd participating like no other. We ended up on stage by the end of the night and it was an amazing experience!

If you are looking for some tasty and fresh meals you should definitely visit Mr. Grouper’s Restaurant. There you will find drinks, Caribbean, American and Italian food.  The restaurant only accepts VISA, MasterCard and Discover. The service could be greater but I think it was due to a large party therefore it made it difficult for them to service us.

If you would like to do excursions while in Turks I would suggest booking prior to your trip. Due to the fact, they are always busy and booked so you may not get to experience the island the way you would like to. Click here for a list of other things that you can do while on the island. These excursions are optional and may be a bit on the pricy side.

This is a great place for lunch on a day when you’re exploring the island and you want to kick back and enjoy the ocean view. The drinks and meals are fulfilling such as conch fritters, crack lobster and fish burger. There is live music during 1 PM to 3PM I believe.

A great spot for dinner and a glimpse at Provo’s night life. This strip has a few restaurants and bars so definitely enjoy this area. It has live music and its a great area to hang with friends or nice walk with bae.

A very quiet relaxed beach area to enjoy the sun. This is near the Fish Fry area so you can get a glimpse at the beach during the day and night. You can hop on boat tours at this location as well.

Tips:

Cash: Turks and Caicos accepts US currency. You can also use your debit and credit cards there but be sure to contact your bank to inform them of your travel plans. Turks is an expensive island. When you visit their grocery store and compare the prices, you will definitely see the difference.

Transportation: If you prefer to rent a car to explore the island on your own, be aware that they drive on the left side of the street. Cab rides are expensive, typically charged per person not on time or distance.

Packing: You can pack attire –casual chic swimwear for the daytime and dressy causal summer wear for the evenings.
